Storage Tips

  • It is the renters responsibility to ensure that their property is stored properly to prevent damage
  • Do not store any pourous materials (wood, cardboard, furniture etc.) directly on concrete floor.
  • Consider using pallets to allow airflow.
  • Do not lean anything porous up against metal walls
  • If you do not plan to access your property, it is best to stack it. You will want to make best use of the entire storage space. One common mistake is to try to create an aisle in a small storage space.If you want an aisle, you need to get a bigger space. Make sure stacks do not create a falling hazard.
  • We do not keep keys to individual storage units. If you lose your keys, you must contact us and we will have the lock removed at a cost to you. Only those persons whose name appears on the rental agreement will have the ability to request this service. DO NOT TO ATTEMPT TO REMOVE THE LOCK YOURSELF. Any damage to our building will be your responsibility.
  • Renters are responsible for insuring the stored goods.
  • Renters are responsible for supplying their own rodent repellent.
  • It might be a good idea to wax wood furniture before storing it. Some wood can be sensitive to moisture.
  • Do not use plastic to cover items as moisture can condense under it. Consider using sheets or cotton cloths
  • Stand mattresses on end, as well as sofas, with pallets or cardboard under them. It is a good idea to wrap mattresses in mattress bags or cover them with paper or cloth. Stand mattresses on something to allow airflow and to prevent moisture from getting to them. Walls may develop condensation; therefore it is not advised to lean items against the walls.
  • Wrap pictures that are small and stand them on end in boxes. For larger ones, buy special picture moving box. Consider using foam or bubble wrap.
  • Consider buying boxes with dividers. Wrap each item with paper or foam. Label boxes with glass, and do not stack other items on these. Add packing material to both the bottom and the top of boxes.
  • If storing wool items, use cedar chips and or mothballs to prevent moth damage
  • Label all moving boxes. It is a good idea to indicate what room it goes in and what the box contains.
  • Tape doors of your furniture shut when moving. Wedge doors open in the storage unit to prevent mildew.
  • Do not store items that might break if frozen. Do not store food items.
  • May be a good idea to put a few drops of oil on items that might rust. Insure that these items don’t come in contact with other items.
  • Do not make boxes too heavy.
  • Keep out of season clothes accessible. You may have your belongings in storage longer than anticipated.
  • Do not store any toxins or flammables such as paint, oil, or gasoline.
  • Keep belongings back from the door. Not only will it create a falling hazard if stacked too closely to the door, but snow can get under the doors if winds are high.
